What are Heart Rate Zones?

Your heart beats faster when you exercise to supply oxygen-rich blood to your working muscles. By monitoring how fast your heart is beating in Beats Per Minute (BPM), you can definitively know which "energy system" your body is currently utilizing. These boundaries are referred to as Heart Rate Zones.

The Karvonen Formula vs. Standard Formula

Many basic fitness machines (like older treadmills or ellipticals) calculate your Maximum Heart Rate using the simplistic Fox formula: 220 - Age. They then take simple percentages of that number to give you a "Target Heart Rate".

However, this generic method ignores your current fitness level. A professional athlete and an untrained individual of the exact same age will be given the exact same zones, which is physiologically incorrect.

This calculator utilizes the much more advanced Karvonen Formula. The Karvonen method factors in your Resting Heart Rate (RHR), which is a direct indicator of your cardiovascular fitness. The calculation establishes your Heart Rate Reserve (HRR) first:

Which Zone Should You Train In?

Zone 2 (The "Fat Burning" Zone)

In Zone 2 (60-70%), the exercise intensity is low enough that your body has the time and oxygen required to convert stored body fat into energy. This is why it is highly recommended for weight loss. Additionally, endurance athletes (marathon runners, cyclists) spend 80% of their training volume in Zone 2 to build mitochondrial density without burning out.

Zone 4 (The Anaerobic Zone)

In Zone 4 (80-90%), your body cannot intake enough oxygen to fuel the muscles with fat, so it switches to burning glycogen (carbohydrates). This produces lactic acid. Training in this zone increases your "Lactate Threshold", meaning you can train harder and faster for longer before your muscles give out.
