While genetics play the most significant role in determining a person's height, environmental factors such as nutrition and physical activity also contribute. The Mid-Parental Height method (also known as the Tanner Method) is a standard clinical tool used by pediatricians to set a baseline for a child's growth potential.
The Mid-Parental Formula
The calculation differs based on biological sex because of the average height difference between adult males and females:
- For Boys: (Father's Height + Mother's Height + 13) / 2
- For Girls: (Father's Height + Mother's Height - 13) / 2
This formula provides the "mid-point," with a standard variation of ±8.5 cm representing the most likely range for the child's final adult stature.
