Nutrition During the Breastfeeding Journey
Producing breast milk is a highly energy-intensive process for the maternal body. On average, exclusively breastfeeding a newborn requires an additional 330 to 500 calories per day beyond what is needed to maintain pre-pregnancy weight. Meeting these caloric needs is vital not only for milk production but also for maternal energy levels and postpartum recovery.
How It Works
The calculation is based on your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) adjusted for physical activity, with a specific "Lactation Bonus" added based on the intensity of nursing:
- Exclusively Breastfeeding: Adds approx. 500 calories.
- Partial Breastfeeding: Adds approx. 250-300 calories.
- Postpartum Weight Loss: Many mothers find they can safely lose weight by consuming slightly fewer calories than the total requirement, as the body utilizes fat stores accumulated during pregnancy.
